Emotional regulation is a lifelong skill which is continually being developed. It can be understood in a nutshell as how we as individuals are aware of and manage/work with our emotions. Often people have trouble managing their emotions and this leads to suppression or bottling things. When we bottle up our emotions its similar to avoidance in that they do not go away but remain and often the intensity comes pouring out at some point whether we like it or not. Learning emotional regulation skills as an adult means becoming mindfully away of and accepting emotion and the causes for emotion in our lives. Once awareness grows so does potential for greater control and collaboration with emotion rather than ignoring, suppressing or acting on all levels and forms of emotion.
Emotion is a great thing and a part of being a human being! Emotion just needs to be managed and understood so it can really enriched our lives individually and in relationships.
