Mindfulness has gained a lot of attention in the recent years, and for good reason. It is all about being in the present moment without judgement; a sort of noticing where one is, how they are feeling, what is before them. By contrast mindfulness is not worrying about the future, ruminating on the past, criticizing, and judging. Mindfulness allows the person a bit of freedom to just be in the moment they are in.
Mindfulness is a skill brought in and taught in psychotherapy very often and used for the empowerment of the client in the management of many things including, anxiety, depression, and stress. As clients develop their skills in this they also often layer in more skills connected to distress tolerance, coping, emotional regulation and acceptance to build a repertoire of new adaptations to the challenges they face.
Mindfulness can be practice directly through guided meditations but also can be integrated well into daily life through different exercises focused on noticing and slowing down to be present. Presently there are many wonderful apps available which also teach and offer guided mediations to allow many people to access the benefits of increased levels of mindfulness in their daily lives.
