Trauma is a word that has been used a lot in popular culture and social media in the recent years. My understanding of trauma is what happens to us when we are exposed to an overwhelming circumstance where we feel/think we have no option but to fight/flight/freeze. This response is a biological behavior which naturally happens when we detect threat. What happens and the emotions after the incident can be something which people seek help in processing and working through so that they do not continue to react in the same way to triggers that remind them of the initial traumatic incident. While it can feel intimidating to focus on healing and working through these things it is also reassuring to sense the body and mind’s ability to heal and be resilient.
